Hydroponics: A Guide to Cleaning Your Kit

If you've finally decided that you're ready to take the plunge and start hydroponic gardening, you will no doubt be excited to begin growing some delicious homegrown produce. This article explores everything you need to know about cleaning your hydroponic system. Read on to discover more!

Remove the plants and equipment

Lay down some sheets of newspaper or drop cloths to protect your floors and counters as you go through the process of taking apart and cleaning all of your hydroponic gardening items. It's a good idea to empty any reservoirs or other nutrient solution containers, disconnect your pump and remove the light from the space where you'll be cleaning.

Remove dust and dirt

After you've emptied your hydroponics system and taken apart the individual pieces of equipment, it's time to use a soft brush to carefully remove any dust or dirt from both the surfaces of your equipment and the tank itself.

Rinse the tank

You can now rinse the tank using warm water to remove any suds and grime that's clinging to the glass panels. Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down the inside of the tank and all of the hydroponic gardening components with warm soapy water.

Sanitise everything

To disinfect your entire system, you can make use of various products available from your local hydroponics shop that are specially formulated for this purpose. This stage will help to remove any bacteria or fungal spores from the tank.

Use compressed air

Use a can of compressed air to clean the tubing. Simply attach a straw to the nozzle of the can. Next, point the tip of the straw in the tubing and press the button on the top of the can for a few seconds. Doing so will send a blast of air down the tube that will carry any dust and dirt away with it. Once you are done with this, blow into the air stones with it for a few minutes using the straw. Doing so will help to remove any dirt that has been collected on the stones.

Rebuild the kit

When everything is completely dry, you can reconstruct the kit and add new nutrients and water. Congratulations, you are now ready to start growing your next crop of plants.
