Ways to Make Your Self-Storage Unit Extra Secure

Self-storage units often prove useful in times of need. From downsizing through to going travelling, they're an excellent resource when you need extra space. Leaving your goods in a space you don't often visit can sometimes feel daunting. To put your mind at ease, it's worth considering some of the ways you can make a self-storage facility extra secure.

Make sure it features all the security basics

Are you using a unit that comes with all the security basics you need? From perimeter fences that limit who can access it through to CCTV, there are lots of ways the provider can ensure your goods remain extra safe. Other features to look out for include:

  • Alarms on the external gates
  • Individual alarms for the units
  • A continuous security presence
  • The perimeter fence shouldn't have any breakages

Start adding your own layers of security

If you're going to the effort of storing goods, they likely mean something to you. Although the self-storage facility you use will provide some security, you can bolster it with your own lock. Ideally, you will use one without a key. Key locks sometimes come with common features, and there's always the risk that someone could replicate yours. To prevent this from happening, find a lock that requires a code and create one that's difficult to guess. For example, don't use your birthday or the birthday of anybody who is close to you.

Make an inventory for your self-storage unit

When you place your goods in storage, it's always wise to create an inventory. Make sure to write down what you place in there and the condition it's in. You should keep your inventory safe and cross items off when you remove them, along with the date you took them out of the unit. Try to visit the unit periodically to make sure everything on the list is still there. Making regular visits also gives you the chance to make sure the unit is still secure.

Take out insurance immediately

Even if the unit you're using provides insurance as part of the package, it's worth taking out your own. Paying for an individual insurance policy is the best way to make sure it is detailed enough to meet all your needs. Make sure the policy covers unexpected and rare incidents, such as floods and fires.

Choosing a facility that's already secure and adding your own efforts to it is the best way to keep your goods safe. Always tour a facility before signing a contract and check your unit for security flaws.
