Most homeowners do not realise that when their metal railings are rusted, the problem is more than just aesthetic because with time, the rust eats away at the railing itself. When a balustrade stays rusted for an extended period, it starts weakening and in some extreme cases, it could even end up falling apart altogether. The problem with rust on your balustrade is that it will spread faster than you can imagine, and by the time you start thinking about getting a way to address the damage, it may be too late. However, it is possible to address the problem as soon as it occurs to protect yourself from large losses in the long-run.
Protecting the area around the balustrade
Before you start any rehabilitation, you need to make sure that the area around the structure is protected from any dirt. The options which you have include using drop cloths to cover the floor and taping off everything else with painter's tape. Before removing the rust, make sure that you have the primer ready as this will simplify your process.
Sanding off the rust
The second part of the process includes sanding off the entire surfaces which are covered by rust. If your balustrade is smooth and with little ornamentation, you can simply use sanding tools, sponges or a small power sander to assist you with the process. Other materials which will help reach the tough spots include sanding chords and sanding tape. If there are parts of the system which are left with residual rust, use naval jelly for the removal. Naval jelly contains phosphoric acid which is very effective in rust removal.
Applying the primer
When the entire balustrade is clean, spray the surface with an oil-based primer which is effective in inhibiting rust. If there are any areas which are difficult to reach with the painting tool, use a small brush to access them. Use your judgment to determine where additional coatings may be needed and apply them as needed.
The process of protecting your rusty balustrade from further destruction by rust is that simple. However, if you have serious rust issues which you cannot handle by yourself, it would be best to consult a supplier to find out whether you should replace the structure altogether. When you are having the new structure installed, make sure that it has adequate coating to protect it from rusting. A competent supplier will be in a position to let you know if you the balustrade is rust resistant.
